Just in case you were wondering what I mean when I say, “In the dead of winter”, I took this today. It snowed for 46 hours straight and now the wind and extreme cold are moving in. It is definitely winter.
When I started this challenge, I thought it was going to be really difficult. We have been so conditioned through out our lives to eat a certain way. Winter in Minnesota meant hot tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. It meant pot roast and pies. Cold weather called for hot food. But do we really need our food to be hot to satisfy us when the snow is flying?
I thought so. That is why I choose to be 80-90% raw in winter. I would always say, where I live, it gets really cold so you need hot food at times. I am finding that I couldn’t have been more wrong. Warm food, healthy food, raw food is very possible when it is cold. It can be satisfying and most of all, you feel fabulous when eating it.
Tonight, I made the tomato soup from the main blog. You can find it HERE. It was heated in the dehydrator and nice and warm by the time it came out. Very satisfying. I do find that I am eating more nut based items and more grains (sprouted in breads, etc). I want heavier foods to combat the cold. But you can still do that and enjoy the benefits of being raw.
And enjoying the benefits I am! I would say that 98% of my food cravings have gone. I still have moments where something will catch my eye, but with no real power over me. I find it so fascinating. As we stray away from nutrient dense food, we seem to want more and more. It honestly doesn’t take that long to break that. You will find yourself wanting the good stuff, more and more!
Today’s Tip: Heavier raw foods can be a real blessing during a cold, long winter. It is a good time to experiment with sprouted grains and nuts. Both have amazing health benefits.
