So far, we have been taking a few little steps to start engaging our awareness around food. What is one of the most powerful tools we have available to us as far as being aware goes? Checking in. And it is so simple. You just have to remember to do it.
How it works: The next time you feel like you want to grab something to eat, stop and check in with yourself. Start with your state of being or your heart. Are you stressed or relaxed. Lonely? Next, check your stomach. Are you really hungry or maybe you are thirsty. Really identify if it is true hunger that is pushing you towards food or just the desire to fill another need.
This simple process of checking in gives us a moment to really understand why we are moving towards food. So many times it has nothing to do with hunger but some other state of mind or need that we are experiencing. We get so accustom to using food to nurture ourselves, when it is something else we are longing for.
For Today: Check in. Take some notes. Really start to discover what is driving you towards food.
My notes from yesterday: Really being mindful with my food was a challenge yesterday. I had two meals out with friends. To deal with this, I tried to not talk as I was eating (good manners aside), but as you are involved with conversation and people, it is difficult.
