Dehydrator Giveaway!

by Susan on March 15, 2010

The time has come to do our first giveaway and is it ever a good one! Many raw food recipes require a dehydrator and if you don’t have one, it can be challenging. One of the most common questions I get is how to prepare the raw food recipes without a dehydrator. I hope to fix that problem for one of you!

The great folks over at TSM Dehydrators have donated a 300.00, 5 shelf, stainless Dehydrator, the D5! I couldn’t be happier to be able to offer this! I have one of these dehydrators. It is my favorite. It is quiet, sturdy, very easy to pull apart and clean and does a great job at temperature control. I have checked. Continue for the rules!

Here are the rules:

Enter by simply asking a question you have about raw food in the comment area.

Only one entry allowed per person.

Entries will close at 6pm on Thursday, March 18th, 2010.

Winner will be randomly selected and announced following the contest.

I will be answering your questions in upcoming blog posts!

Hello,
I hope this question hasn’t been asked: Can all vegetables be eaten raw? Like mushrooms? Also is Agave Nectar really raw?

Barbara H March 17, 2010 at 11:02 pm

What vitamins and/or supplements do you recommend taking while eating raw vegan (if any)?

nicole March 17, 2010 at 11:32 pm

I have a couple of questions: 1. What is a Living Foodist or Raw Foodist?

2. I understand the physical effects of a raw diet, however I know very little about the psychological effects. What Psychological Effects Can I Expect When I Go to a Raw Diet?

Thanks!

jae March 17, 2010 at 11:35 pm

what are some of your favorite raw comfort foods?

D. Zemira March 17, 2010 at 11:41 pm

At the top of my wish list is a dehydrator! It’s been a month since I invested in 2 of the 3 big tools (blender and food processor) and so far I feel as if I’ve bought some freedom, but I’m itching to experiment at another level. Also, I can’t wait to process nuts properly. My goal is to do 100% raw for 30 days, beginning this summer (of course) to see what happens. I’m very, very curious.

My question is (more than one): Since you’ve been completely raw do you really feel healthier, more energetic? My concern is proper absorption of B12, which I understand is best received from animal sources. Do you find it easy to slip off the raw diet, and does it cause you great havoc when you do? What about cravings for hot comfort foods?

P.S. As does everyone here, I so appreciate the fresh simplicity of your site, the content and your lovely macro shots (which inspired me to dust off my camera–all winter I’ve forgotten it). Every time I enter your site I feel as if I’m breathing deeply. Blessings to you!

Oh, goodie!!! :) Is flax seed safe to eat whole?? My hubby is concerned about eating them whole and especially concerned about giving them to our 11 month old. We’ve made a few crackers or him (from a raw baby foods uncookbook) and so far so good… hubby heard flax can get stuck in the colon if not broken down and cause problems later. ?? thx!

Dear Susan,
First, I want to thank you for presenting raw food preparation that tantilizes the mind, body and spirit! Your visuals are so inspiring, and the recipes I have tried so far have been beyond delicious! Thank you!
My question for your “Rawmazing Contest” concerns food combining “rules” and their affect on how we prepare our raw meals. Since there are conflicting schools of thought on this matter, what are your views and guidance on this subject?

Jean March 18, 2010 at 2:07 am

What an awesome giveaway! I feel like most desserts are super heavy in nuts. I know a lot of people who can’t easily digest nuts and would like know what your favorite nut-free dessert recipe is?

Nicola March 18, 2010 at 2:24 am

Hi Susan,
I absolutely love this website! Thank you so much. My question is – why is maple syrup used in raw recipes, even though it isn’t raw? Does it have particularly beneficial properties?

kristi alward March 18, 2010 at 2:39 am

Is birch sugar better than agave? I know dates are the way to go with all raw sweetner, but they just aren’t sweet enough for me when produce is out of season, or I have a sweet tooth. Is there another sweetner that would be considered raw beside stevia?
Kristi

I know a lot of raw fooders that avoid caffeine. Does consuming caffeine specifically undo the goodness of raw food, or is the avoidance due to other health concerns?

Marty March 18, 2010 at 3:24 am

I love the raw diet – and use nuts a lot in my recipes. I’ve recently read though that walnuts have aflatoxins. I’ve know about peanuts having them so I’ve not eaten peanuts for years. I’ve substituted pecans for walnuts in many recipes. Why is there not any mention about walnuts and aflatoxins on any raw sites?

Thank you! I LOVE your website!

jrd March 18, 2010 at 3:47 am

is this entry too late?

Is there a difference between living foods and raw foods?

Charlotte March 18, 2010 at 5:50 am

I find the raw diet very interesting, and your website is a very good introduction to it. I have a few concern however, such as the use of such large quantities of nuts in many recipes. I have also heard that some vegetables, such as carrots and tomatoes, are actually better for you when cooked. What do you think?

Francoise March 18, 2010 at 7:07 am

What do you think about the gluten connection? I don’ t have celiac’s but I do feel much better when I don’t eat wheat or gluten products. Why is that?

Deneen March 18, 2010 at 7:25 am

My question would be what would be a good use for all the vegetable pulp that I have leftover after juicing, it seems like such a shame to throw it away.

Thank you for all the effort you put into your website, it is so beneficial and inspirational!

Irene March 18, 2010 at 8:08 am

Now that you’ve taught us we can make pancakes out of banana and agave,
I’m wondering — is there a way to make crackers out of vegetables instead of nuts and seeds?

Sure enjoying the window onto beauty, nature, healing and exceptional cuisine that you open for us all ! ! ! ! !

Mike March 18, 2010 at 8:26 am

How can I make a raw food diet affordable. I was a raw vegan for over a year and quit because it was just costing way to much money. I cannot afford 10-15 USD a day on food.

What are some cost effective solutions?

Katie March 18, 2010 at 8:32 am

Do you think it’s better to juice or to blend? Or to do a combination of both?

Michelle March 18, 2010 at 8:33 am

I would love to win this dehydrator. I have been lusting after one for a while!!! My question is as a newbie with raw foods, can I enjoy a raw diet and still be able to comfortably deal with gallbladder disease? I know nuts can be an irritant to it, and that there are other options besides nuts to eat, but are there othere concerns a person with gallbladder disease should have with a raw diet??

kelli March 18, 2010 at 8:55 am

what are some ways i can use my leftover almond milk pulp? thanks!

brooke lyssy March 18, 2010 at 9:19 am

what are some of the staples of a raw food diet that a college student can easily prepare each week? it would be helpful to know about foods that I could prepare *without* a dehydrator… unless I win this one.

Elina March 18, 2010 at 9:41 am

I was wondering is it possible to grow your own maca and make powder of it and how is this done? Im thinking about growing some maca in my garden this summer!

Leslie March 18, 2010 at 9:42 am

I have a general question about chia. I have been gelling it and using in my smoothies, but I wonder if you can eat too much? With raw foods and healthy items that aren’t so mainstream, its hard to find good answers on “serving size” or recommended amounts.
Thanks!

Debbie G. March 18, 2010 at 9:42 am

I have been experimenting with preparing raw food recipes. I just love your website. I have tried several things. I have a cheap dehydrator that I have used. My question is, at what temperature can you dehydrate food for it to still be considered raw? I assume there is a certain maximum temp before the heat starts to break down the nutrients and actual “cooking” occurs. Please let me know and thanks for offering this great give away !!!

Janice Hughes March 18, 2010 at 9:55 am

So often people who focus on going completely raw end up eating, or overeating, fruit because of the ease of this. Can you suggest a typical day balance of how to plan out the day so that there is much less emphasis on fruit, particularly in the morning. As a practitioner I’ve worked with so many people that end up being sugar addicts, even though natural sugars, but this impacts their physiological balance. This happened to me after doing 30 days of raw, and i’ve had a challenge with this every since. Suggest for me an entire day with veggies on the menu! What would that look like?

Katy March 18, 2010 at 9:59 am

I want to try a raw diet to improve my health but when I have experimented with it in the past it was just too expensive for me to keep up. Winning a dehydrator would really help me get started!
I have a medical condition that precludes me from eating any acidic fruit (for example citrus fruit, apples, pineapples) and my naturopath advised against bananas and melons. Living in Minnesota also makes it difficult or expensive to obtain out of season fruit. My question would be: can I maintain a healthy raw diet with so little fruit included?
Thanks! I really want to try it, but get frustrated with by all the smoothie advocates!

dana hirst March 18, 2010 at 10:13 am

I am a new raw food enthusiast. I am eating about 50% raw now. Does the body go through a kind of a shock when changing to raw foods? In particular, the digestive system. My digestine seems to have gotten a little worse. I was wondering if it gets worse before it gets better, if it needs to regulate, or detox?

Pamela Hatfield March 18, 2010 at 10:18 am

How did you find the raw food field and when are you going to publish a book of your recipes? And does this dehydrator work better than the Excaliber?

Andrew March 18, 2010 at 10:21 am

I have Herpes Simplex 2 which I choose to control through my diet rather than through prescription drugs. This requires a careful Arginine/Lysine balance. L-Arginine is necessary to support cell regeneration, but will aggravate my symptoms. Lysine suppresses the growth of the virus by suppressing Arginine uptake.

With nuts and seeds being such a high component of a raw diet, how can I maintain this careful and very important balance while staying fully raw?

lawyermom March 18, 2010 at 10:33 am

Can you give so me receipes for dehydrated veggies? Also, are there any raw vegan options for probiotics? I want to take someprobiotics but most of them have dairy or gluten (to which I have an allergy). Thank you!

Dino March 18, 2010 at 10:33 am

I do a far bit of traveling as a musician, i’d like to get some advise on how i could best maintain a healthy raw food diet whilst away on tour.

With Thanks
Dino :)

my question is: i live in a remote north area in the usa, where can i get the best price for things i cannot grow myself here (ie cacao) online?

what a beeeautiful dehydrator!!!!!!!

Guru Nam Kaur Khalsa March 18, 2010 at 10:42 am

I’ve been drawn to raw foods philosophically for some time now. My question is about the digestability of eating raw. Is there some way to improve the digestability of a totally raw diet?

Thanks,
gnk

Angie March 18, 2010 at 10:46 am

Hello Suzan,

First of all, congratz for the terrific job you do at maintaining this site, I’ve browsed through it and I must admit, I’m quite amazed at how good it looks ! (pictures & everything)

Now, My question is : How about legumes & other dried foods, is there really no way appart from using them in “flour” form, to cook them ?? Would soaking in a particular way make them usable ?
Thank you !

Lynne March 18, 2010 at 10:53 am

I’m eating about 50% raw now and would like to know how eating raw affects those of us with diabeties and celiac ?? I think having a dehydrator would certainly increase my chances of NOT being bored with food menus.

I really enjoy your site. Thanks for all you do.

Anna Pohmer March 18, 2010 at 11:17 am

I love juicing….but what can I make with the leftover pulp?

Hannah March 18, 2010 at 11:21 am

I’ve seen a lot of chia seeds in raw food recipes, but when I research them most of the info online seems to be about weight loss, which definitely isn’t my main goal in eating right. I guess I’m wondering what the specific properties are of chia that make it so great. I know they’re a great energy boost, but is that it?

charlotte March 18, 2010 at 11:24 am

Oooh great giveaway! I’ve always wanted a dehydrator! My mom has one gathering dust in her basement and yet refuses to let me borrow it, you know, just in case she needs it. Hmph. Anyhow, my question is: I have a whole huge can of nutritional yeast that I bought because I was told it was a good source of B12 but the only thing I can think to do with it is sprinkle it on popcorn! Got any other good ways to use the stuff??

Jessica March 18, 2010 at 11:46 am

hi susan-

you have a few recipes using raw oats flour…i’m very allergic to wheat and wheat products, I am wondering how ‘raw’ the oat flour is. My question is are there any wheat/gluten properties in the raw oat flour? i would so love to make some chewy, soft bread that is raw!!

Jennifer March 18, 2010 at 11:46 am

How to suggest introducing a raw diet to a toddler?

Mayra March 18, 2010 at 11:49 am

Hi,

I am new to eating raw food and one of my questions is:

If I went raw and did not eat meat, when I eat it ,will my body have a bad reaction to it?

Thanks,

Mayra

Shivie March 18, 2010 at 11:50 am

what are your favorite ways to use soaked wheatberries?

Cyndi March 18, 2010 at 12:04 pm

Trying out my own mini-garden for the first time this season. I’m about to start planting seeds now (indoors). Any tips on what to put in (or not put in) to get the best and healthiest results? I’ve got as far as organic plant food for vegetables. I’m growing tomatoes, garlic chives and cilantro. Thank you for advice and this great giveaway!

Angelina March 18, 2010 at 12:06 pm

I live in a very warm and humid climate . I love to take food with me to the beach and the mountains when I travel. My question is: what are the best ways to pack and maintain raw foods while being outdoors for extended periods of time?

Kathleen March 18, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Do you have any suggestions for balancing blood sugar, while eating mainly raw? I tend to get migraines when I eat 100% raw.
I have only heard about Excalibur dehydrators and the inexpensive round ones that they sell at mass-market retailers. My concern with the Excalibur is the plastic, and thus breakable, front cover. So, thank you for including the link to the manufacturer. I am going to investigate their unit!

s. March 18, 2010 at 12:42 pm

I love love love your website! What are ways to use spirulina that eliminate the ‘fishy’ taste? (I bought a good brand but . . ) Also How much bee pollen is too much to eat in a day?

Mary March 18, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Hi I been eating mostly raw since the 1st of the month. One of the things I notice I am trying to compensate for is bread and cheese. Do you know of raw recipe that gives you the same fluffy texture you get from a good artisan bread ? Thanks for all the good recipes and info it is much appreciated.

Paula Laurel March 18, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Your website is most appealing, very informative and highly addictive!!!
I do, from time to time use my dehydrator for a number of snacks and breads using either fruits of sprouted wheat berries. I would like to know more about issues concerning bacteria, (in particular when dealing with fruit, or wheat berries). Unless all possible moisture is completely dried out, wouldn’t it be susceptible to developing bacteria during the long dehydration period?

Keep up the fantastic work!!!

Cheers,

Paula

Dear Susan,
THANK YOU for always willing to share all of your inspiring creations! Your work in absolutely incredible! Including your photography! My daughter has a love for photography too and you have truly inspired her to use her camera more, she too now has started her own 365 photography blog site. THANK YOU it’s awesome to see her push herself to be all she can be!
My question in regards to the contest would be: Do you also use/make your own raw facial/body products? I am striving to not only treat my insides to raw, vegan foods but also my outside. I look forward to your feedback! Thanks again for all you do to inspire the rest of us! Robin :-)
