I seem to be finding treasures everywhere these days. Recently, at a dinner I was invited to I met Micaela Preston, a fellow author and green living advocate. I was so impressed with her and her book, “Practically Green” I asked her to write a post for Rawmazing. I think you will love the information she has on her website, Mindful Momma, and in her book very interesting and useful. Cleaning up our lives, and our planet goes hand in hand with cleaning up our diet. You can find her book here: Practically Green
Practically Green by Micaela Preston
I am a practical person by nature. I think before I jump in. I don’t do fads. I like simple over complicated. That’s precisely my attitude toward green living. I don’t do it because it’s trendy. I don’t do it because I think that I should. My goal was never to completely re-vamp my life in an absolutely green way. Similar to Susan’s approach to eating raw, I view green living as an integral part of my life but not as an ultimatum.
Instead, I do what I can because I truly want to. In fact, I practice a new version of green living on a daily basis. This practical approach balances my desire to do what’s right for the planet and the health of my family, with the reality of constraints like time, money and whatever else is going on that day. My goal is to be mindful of my choices – not to be stressed out about them.
Would you like to live your life in a practically green way? Here are a few simple ways to approach it. My guess is that once you get started, living green will become a habit and you’ll forget that you ever lived any other way!
- Living – Develop a less-is-more mindset when you shop. Do you really need that new t-shirt? Can you find it second-hand? Is it reusable instead of disposable?
- Eating – Use the Dirty Dozen list as a guide, focus on the foods you eat the most (for my family it’s apples and potatoes) and buy those organic. Frequent your local farmer’s market for the freshest, healthiest produce!
- Beautifying – Use the Skin Deep cosmetics database to research greener, healthier body care products. Consider making your own beauty products, like this easy lip balm made with only 4 ingredients.
- Cleaning – Conventional cleaning products contain some nasty ingredients but don’t dump them all at once. Instead, get rid of the most toxic offenders first and then look for safer, more earth-friendly products as you run out. Plus, you won’t believe how easy it is to make your own cleaning products. Here’s a recipe for an all-purpose spray that you can use all over the house. Enjoy!
